Initial Post
Professional Biography
I have been a nurse for 24 years and have worked in various areas including Labor and Delivery,
School Nursing, Primary Care, Med-Surg Floor, Home Health Infusion Services, and Nurse Care
Management of high-risk patients with multiple chronic diseases. I assisted launching the
pediatric nursing triage services for our local health system approximately 4 years ago and will
continue working in this capacity until August when I begin my practicum rotations. My passion
lies in caring for pediatric patients and although I have worked in other areas, I have always
returned to pediatrics.
Course
I am looking forward to this course and learning more in depth on how to care for infants,
children, adolescents, as well as providing support for their families. By utilizing the education
provided through our textbook, we will learn the age-appropriate development milestones
and wellness visits, and address topics including family support, mental health, nutrition, oral
health, sexuality, and safety. (Pediatrics, 2017) This will assist in meeting my professional goals
of becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner within a primary care setting. The information
learned within this class will be necessary to provide excellent patient care.
Diversity and Inclusion
As a future nurse practitioner, it will be critical that I continue learning and growing in my
knowledge about cultural competency. By learning about various diverse cultures and
disparities, I will be able to provide an inclusive environment for all my patients and their
families. Learning about the patient populations that I will be caring for, listening to my
patients, and seeking out additional education will be important to successfully implement
these things. (Brottman et al., 2020) It has been studied and found that many have unconscious
bias which often will direct our medical decisions regarding patient care. Areas which bias may
be present include racial, gender, sexual, gender minority, and disability. Completing self-
assessments and spending time reflecting on our personal thoughts and bias will help us to
avoid these barriers in providing inclusive patient care for everyone. (Marcelin et al., 2019)
