Overview of Vector Spaces
A vector space is a fundamental idea in linear algebra and the foundation for several
applications in mathematics and engineering. By giving vectors and their operations a
mathematical framework, it enables us to examine and resolve multi-dimensional quantity-
related issues.

What are vector spaces?
A vector space is a set of vectors along with two operations: vector addition and scalar
multiplication. Let's consider a vector space V in three dimensions (3D) defined by V = {(x, y, z) |
x, y, z ∈ ℝ}.
Definition of Vector Spaces
The set V satisfies the following axioms:
1. Closure under addition: For any vectors u = (x1, y1, z1) and v = (x2, y2, z2) in V, their sum
u + v is also in V: u + v = (x1 + x2, y1 + y2, z1 + z2).

2. Closure under scalar multiplication: For any vector u = (x, y, z) in V and any scalar c ∈ ℝ,
the scalar multiple cu is also in V: cu = (cx, cy, cz).
3. Associativity of addition: For any vectors u, v, and w in V, (u + v) + w = u + (v + w).
4. Commutativity of addition: For any vectors u and v in V, u + v = v + u.
5. Identity element for addition: There exists a vector 0 in V such that for any vector u in V,
u + 0 = u.
6. Inverse element for addition: For every vector u in V, there exists a vector -u in V such
that u + (-u) = 0.
7. Distributivity of scalar multiplication over vector addition: For any vector u and v in V
and any scalars a and b in ℝ, a(u + v) = au + bv.
8. Distributivity of scalar multiplication over scalar addition: For any vector u in V and any
scalars a and b in ℝ, (a + b)u = au + bu.

, 9. Compatibility of scalar multiplication with scalar multiplication: For any vector u in V and
any scalars a and b in ℝ, (ab)u = a(bu).

A vector space is a set V of items called vectors and two operations that meet a set of axioms:
vector addition and scalar multiplication. These axioms guarantee that vector spaces have
particular characteristics including closure under addition and scalar multiplication, the
presence of a zero vector, and additive inverses for all vectors.

Scalar Multiplication and Vector Addition
In a vector space, multiplying a vector by a scalar also produces a vector, as does adding two
vectors together. We look at the commutativity, associativity, distributivity, and identity element
existence of vector addition and scalar multiplication.
Let u = (1, 2, 3) and v = (-2, 0, 1) be two vectors in V. Their sum is: u + v = (1, 2, 3) + (-2, 0, 1) = (-
1, 2, 4).
Now, let c = 3 be a scalar. The scalar multiple of vector u is: c * u = 3 * (1, 2, 3) = (3, 6, 9).

Subspaces
A vector space's subspace V is a subset of V, which is a vector space in and of itself. We
investigate the prerequisites, such as closure under vector addition and scalar multiplication, for
a subset to be a subspace. Subspaces are essential in linear algebra because they offer a
practical method for representing and working with vector spaces.

Consider a subset W of V defined by W = {(x, y, 0) | x, y ∈ ℝ}. W is a subspace of V because it is
closed under vector addition and scalar multiplication.
For example, let u = (1, 2, 0) and v = (-2, 0, 0) be two vectors in W. Their sum is: u + v = (1, 2, 0) +
(-2, 0, 0) = (-1, 2, 0), which is in W.
Now, let c = 3 be a scalar. The scalar multiple of vector u is: c * u = 3 * (1, 2, 0) = (3, 6, 0), which
is also in W.

The concepts of linear independence and
dependence
Consider three vectors u = (1, 0, 0), v = (0, 1, 0), and w = (1, 1, 0) in V. We can check their linear
independence as follows:
