P4- Explain positive working practice with individuals with additional learning needs.

M2- Discuss positive working practice with individuals with additional learning needs.

A positive working practice is carried out by health professionals and allows health and social care
workers to meet the needs of the clients as it allows individuals to address their additional needs.
This helps to build up confidence and self-esteem as the rights of the individuals are promoted, it
also encourages them to have control over their own lives. Example of this may be;

 Positive reinforcement is used when the service user does something for themselves such as
making themselves a snack or washing themselves, the professional will praise them by
telling them how well they have done. This is seen as positive feedback and is more likely to
encourage the service user to carry on doing things for themselves. If and when the service
user conducts bad behaviour it should not be rewarded or praised. This is all supported by
the coal workers code of conduct, they say that their duties include promoting
independence, positive reinforcement is needed to do this. The service user will then be
more likely to carry on these behaviors when they are independent in somewhere such as
work or educational setting.

 Personal care reinforces positive working practice as a health professional might pull the
shower curtain across and allow the patient to wash themselves when they are able to.
Failing this, a positive working practice will be applied when the professional is dressing the
patient, this may include being gentle and taking into consideration the patients privacy.
This will gain the professional trust and respect from the patient. The human rights act says
that every patient or client has the right to privacy, this means that staff must always be
gentle and must never be abusive or mistreat any patient. Anyone receiving personal care is
benefitting from the service as they are receiving help and support regarding their additional
needs.

 Promoting independence is important as it allows service users to do things for themselves,
this may be doing something such as feeding themselves, this should be encouraged and
praised. Self-ability will develop from doing things for themselves, which will lead on to them
doing other things for themselves. It is a part of the code of conduct strategy to improve the
life of a disabled individual. When the service user has independence they will have control
and high self-esteem when it comes to carrying out other tasks. The Care Act promotes
independence as it says that there should be a care plan in place which will outline the
needs, strengths and weaknesses of the patient in order to keep the independence of the
patient.

 Promoting self-esteem involves encouraging self-confidence by praising the individual if
they have done something good, this will improve the service user’s confidence due to them
having a good self-image. One act that promotes self-esteem is The equality act as it shares
the idea that all individuals must be treated fairly, in doing this, the confidence of the service
user is increased.

 Financial support may be given to individuals with additional needs as they may struggle
with managing their money. This may include things such as setting up a direct payment for
any bills that they may have, this will then allow them to use the rest of their money on
anything that they might want, this will allow them to feel like they have control. The service
user may also receive addition payments to help with adapting their home to suit their
needs, this will reduce the amount of stress that the individual has to deal with. They may
also receive extra benefits to pay for road tax on their car or disability living allowance etc.
