P4: Explain roles and responsibilities of health and social care workers in improving the health and
quality of life for people with dementia.

Health and wellbeing:
Health - Health, is the condition in which an individual is unbound from injury or illness including
physical, social and mental.
Well-being – Well-being is defined as a comfortable, happy and healthy state.
Policies and strategies:

Assistive technologies:
Door alarms linked to staff pagers – These alert the staff member/ carer when the individual
attempts to leave the room, preventing wandering or falls.
Pressure mats – These detect when an individual has left a room (when placed by the bed or by
the door for example), releasing a noise or notification when activated, this helps to prevent
wandering or falls.
Personal pendant alarms – Personal pendant alarms can be activated by the wearer alerting
friends or family when you require support, this could be for a fall or an accident.
Safe environment – A safe environment means that it is less likely for the individual to fall or
have an accident making them much safer.
Hand rails – Hand rails can help with mobility around the home or care environment and can
prevent falls which may occur without the assistive aid.
Practical aids – For example, wheelchairs. These can be used if the individual has poor or no
mobility capability.
Role and responsibilities:
The holistic approach views the individual with dementia as an individual, as opposed to
concentrating on their illness or disability. As an alternative to treating the individual as an
assortment of symptoms and behaviours to be manipulated, holistic care reflects the whole
individual and their individual qualities, interests, abilities, needs and preferences.
GP
General practitioners (GP’s), are localised family doctors who are commonly the initial point of
contact in regards to any general health concerns. GP’s have a significant role in assessing,
treating and supporting individuals with dementia, whilst also supporting their carers. As a
consequence of this an escalating number of general practitioners have partook in additional
training in dementia. Some general practitioners work intimately with dementia specialists and
have developed particular processes in their practice for individuals with dementia. If further
assessments regarding dementia are required, the general practitioner may refer the individual
to a memory clinic or to see a consultant doctor. After a diagnosis the general practitioner will
organise follow up appointments.
