CAASPP Vocabulary Inference - logical interpretation based on prior knowledge and experience Imply - Suggested by the expressed CLUES given in the text Analyze - Observe, look and break down in order to bring out the essential elements or structure Evidence - Collected data, and clues collected from observations made Background - Information you already have about a topic before reading Explicit - Something that is stated directly and is easy to figure out Textual Evidence - The actual words from something you read; a quotation Conclude - to figure something out Author's Purpose - the writer's reason for writing Claim - a statement that is arguable and used as a primary point to prove an argument Thesis - a statement that demonstrates what a writer intends to support and/or proveserves a clear roadmap for the direction of a paper Cite - to quote a passage, book, author, etc.; to refer to an example Analysis - careful examination and evaluation of the details in the text-providing commentary-Answering: What is the significance of each detail? What affect does each detail create? How do the details shape the reader's response? Elaborate - a way to intensify a point with a definition, example, or amplification. It may even be with the counterargument. But, literally, it means to go the extra mile... Quotation - to repeat a passage or phrase from a novel, article, or speech for authority, illustration, or credibility Paraphrase - A full restatement of a text or passage in other words MLA Format - An accepted format used for citing sources and established by Modern Language Association Refute - to contradict, disprove Archetype - A detail, image, or character type that occurs frequently in literature and myth and is thought to appeal in a universal way to the unconscious and to evoke a response
