NR512 Week 2 Discussion eek 2 Discussion Transformation from Data to Information to Knowledge to Wisdom in Practice Describe a nursing-practice situation in which you experienced the transformations of DIKW. Explain the relationship, if any, between Data to Information to Knowledge to Wisdom in Practice (DIKW) and informatics. Can DIKW exist independently of informatics? When reading about the Data, Information, Knowledge and Wisdom framework, DIKW, I saw a parallel with Benner’s Novice to Expert theory. Building on basic data or fundamentals, applying context and experience, which then translates into knowledge then wisdom or expertise. My first experience with DIKW was my path to become a nurse. When I decided to become nurse, I knew what a nurse was, the types of facilities they worked in, and that they provided care for patients. I then started to acquire additional data as I took our prerequisite classes of anatomy, physiology and chemistry. This data was all very important to know in our field but had no relevance on what a nurse did and how it applied to patient care. Once in nursing school I began to assimilate the data I had gathered with meaning. The “nurse” was put in the context of patient care and the classes I took could be applied at the bedside. I then took information, or the who, what, where and when (Topaz,2013) to create knowledge. Knowledge adds the why and how, to look at relationships and interactions. I created nursing diagnosis and care plans based on data, information and knowledge to provide care and education to my patients. Each course and it’s clinical, used the knowledge gained from classes and previous experiences to create wisdom. Wisdom is the appropriate application of knowledge, the knowing why certain procedures and patient care should and should not be performed. By the end of nursing school, the once meaningless data points had become essential knowledge for all that we do as nurses
