NR 500 Week 4 Assignment APN Professional Development Plan Paper (4).NR 500 Week 4 Assignment APN Professional Development Plan Paper APN Professional Development Plan Paper Marissa Palermo Chamberlain College of Nursing NR500NP July 2019 1APN Professional Development Plan Paper This paper reviews the scope of practice for Florida nurse practitioners. It covers general information as well as required certifications, licensure, and education requirements. In addition, this paper will also cover the core competencies, leadership skills, and different areas of advanced practice. The professional license that nurse practitioners hold is governed by the Florida Nurse Practice Act and the Florida Department of Health. Unfortunately, Florida is one of the most restricted practice states in the United States. This means nurse practitioners need to abide by stricter guidelines under the supervision of a doctor according to Florida state law. Furthermore, this plan will provide information that will act as a guide for pursuing a nurse practitioner license and certification. APN Scope of Practice In the state of Florida, the Florida a board of nursing currently regulates Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure. To become a nurse practitioner or advance practice nurse, an individual must first be a registered nurse and hold a valid registered nurse license from any jurisdiction and a Bachelor of science in nursing, (BSN) degree (FBON, 2019). After obtaining a BSN, “a master’s degree or a post- master’s certificate in a nursing clinical specialty area and a national advanced practice certification from an approved nursing specialty board” is required before applying for the Florida state board licensure (FBON, 2019). Comparable to applying for the RN licensure from the Florida board of nursing, when applying to take the advanced practice nursing boards a clear background check with finger printing is required (FBON, 2019). Most masters level education schools will also require this. Nurse practitioners’ scope of practice depends on which state they are obtaining their license. There is full practice, reduced practice, and restricted practice. Currently, there are 21 states in the United States that have full practice status. This means a nurse practitioner is able 2to evaluate patients, diagnose patients, read diagnostic tests, manage treatments, and write prescriptions for different medications including controlled substances (AANP, 2015). If desired nurse practitioners in a full practice state may have their own practice and see their own patients. In reduced practice, the state requires a collaborative agreement with another healthcare professional before providing care to patients (AANP, 2018). The state of Florida is currently a restricted practice (AANP, 2019). A restricted practice has stricter laws which governs the scope of practice. Nurse practitioners under licensure laws do not have the ability to provide full care to their patients without career-long supervision (AANP, 2018). This requires the nurse practitioner to work under the direction of a physician, and are not permitted to prescribe medication without the supervision or written protocol of a physician (AANP, 2018). Nurse practitioners are primary care providers licensed under chapter 458, chapter 459, and chapter 464 (FBON, 2019). According to these state regulations, nurse practitioners can provide care in various healthcare settings. This includes long-term care facilities, acute care facilities, general primary care and general pediatric care settings.
