Chapter 1: Project Introduction
Section 1: Abstract
Caffeine is a natural substance that can be consumed in many ways from coffee to energy drinks. These
caffeinated drinks or substances have formed a well-known reputation to be used as a performance enhancing
drug by fitness figures and athletes. This is because caffeine works in a certain way that they block
neurotransmitters that are responsible for the relaxation or rest mechanism in our body that promotes us to
sleep. Caffeine also induces the release of adenosine, which then increases factors such as energy, reaction time
and alertness, which theorizes caffeine to positively affect the body. (Ferré, 2010)
There are many factors that determine the effect of caffeine on performance and exercise. These include factors
such as an individual sensitivity to caffeine, the amount of dosage ingested, in addition the effect varies based
on the amount of time the caffeine was consumed. One factor that stands out and is significant when it comes to
utilizing caffeine for performance is the optimal dose which varies based on many factors but is most significant
to the body weight. An Individuals sensitivity also varies from person to person. However, when it comes to
effect of caffeine on exercise performance also varies based on the type of exercise being performed which
breaks down into factors such as if additional weights are used, the duration of the exercise and even the
hydration status of the individual in practice. (Department of Health & Human Services, 2000)
In conclusion, caffeine can show a positive effect on exercise performance, specified to be most efficient in
endurance exercises and high intensity exercises. This is confirmed to have factors such as optimal dosage and
consumption timing to produce optimal effect.
Section 2: Rationale
As exercise and fitness becomes popular a lot of people turn to pre workout and other caffeinated supplements
to allow them to perform their best when exercising. While there are many investigations out there isn’t enough
experiments that show both reaction time and endurance at different amounts of caffeine consumption.
Additionally other literature published show effect of caffeine on only one type of exercise which doesn’t
completely show its effect on the overall faction of exercise. As a result, this study will overlook three possible
different caffeine optimal doses and perform both endurance and reaction time-based tests to see if caffeine
overall does prove to have a positive effect on the performance of exercise.
Section 3: Study Goal
This study's main goal is to achieve a positive correlation between caffeine consumption and exercise
performance. This is focused on the durance exercises and reaction time. This study aims to use a base dosage
and an optimal dose and witness the performance boost because of each dosage to prove that caffeine is a
supposing pre workout supplements
Section 4: Hypothesis
It is theorized that caffeine consumption plays a huge role to providing performance enchantment when it
comes to exercise, therefore on that principle the hypothesis of this experiment will revolve around the optimal
dose of caffeine and its positive effect when it comes to performing exercises which will varied from endurance
to body weight. This is because it is proven that caffeine is a stimulant that blocks neurotransmission of
chemicals that make you exhausted and tired which make you more active and other facts that is allow the most
out of nutrients in our body by increasing metabolism.
