Guidelines for Treating a Patient in an Intensive Care Unit -(DEF/ANSW)-
Review patient's medical record, request information about patient's current status
from nursing (mental capacity, alertness, medicines, vitals), and wash hands and

, apply proper ppe before each session. Always ask nursing staff if you are unsure
about equipment that can be disconnected or how it should be operating.
Identify the location of all tubes, monitor lead connections, intravenous line
connections and insertion sites, and patient-controlled analglesia and maintain
them all free of occlusion and tension.
Evaluate patient's physical and mental status before starting treatment and observe
the patient and monitoring devices throughout treatment and afterward. Note
appearance of and odor of visible wounds, wound dressings, wound drainage, and
urine drainage. Notify nursing of significant change in patient status.
Document and record your activities and observations.


Precautions For Treatment in the ICU -(DEF/ANSW)- Request assistance from
nursing or respiratory service personnel if you identify changes in the function or
performance of the patient support systems (ventilation, drainage devices,
supplemental nutrition, etc.)
Modify or cease treatment if patient exhibits abnormal, unexpected, or undesired
responses to the treatment(changes in vital signs, breathing pattern, indication of
increased pain, reduced mental awareness or alertness.
Avoid occlusion or excessive tension on all tubes, monitor leads, suction units,
supplemental nutrition items, and oxygen lines


After ICU Treatment -(DEF/ANSW)- Be certain patient is properly positioned
Elevate or replace side rails on the bed, if indicated
Position the bedside table and other personal items so they are accessible to the
patient.
Inform the patient of the location of the nurse call device; position it to be
accessible.


Patient Progression in the ICU -(DEF/ANSW)- Assess vital signs, medical
stability, level of alertness, and ability to follow commands.
