Sports… a saving grace for society
Can you imagine a world without sports? It is almost like imagining a world without
water. Not only are sports fun to participate in, but they are extremely beneficial for
your health. Recent statistics show that the average human’s life span is likely to
increase by 10%, if they engage in regular physical activity. However, this is not the
only benefit. Sports also allows people to go out and get some fresh air, instead of
spending tedious weeks trapped inside, with their eyes glued to technical devices.
I’m sure this has convinced the parents who have teenagers out there to sign their
child up to an extracurricular activity or two, however sports are also irrefutably
beneficial to elderly people to. Dr Martin Knight, a professor who specialises in
geriatric studies in Oxford University, founded that watching sports releases 80% of
the endorphins released when physically watching the sport itself, so this is undeniably
an excellent option for the elderly. Similarly, another health benefit of sports is the
social interaction it requires.
No one likes to watch a football match alone. It’s just not the same.
Sports encourages humans to have a break from TikTok, Facebook and Instagram and
instead spend valuable time making memories and interact with each other – not from
behind a screen, but in real life. Surely, this sounds like something this generation
needs?
Sports is an excellent way to promote inclusivity and equality. It shows that there is
something for everyone. Sports provides an opportunity to embrace our inner
competitive selves… some may argue that this encourages violence and causes people to
behave reprehensibly, however I believe sports offers a safe and contained
environment where the competitivity can be managed. You can’t deny that some of the
best memories of your lives were in PE when you were racing across the track, urging to
beat your best friends. Similarly, sports causes all ages, genders and races to come
together and play, sensibly compete and celebrate together. Sports undeniably brings
out the happiest, kindest and healthiest version of ourselves.
