The author of the Numbers series is Rachel ward. She is 56 years old. She grew up in
England. She studied Geography at Durham University. She began writing in her thirties,
starting out with short stories. One of these short stories turned into the opening chapter of
Numbers.

The title

The title of the book is Numbers, because the story is about a girl named Jem. When Jem
looks in someone’s eyes, she can see their number, she sees the date they will die.

Genre
The genre of the book is a thriller, because the book is very exciting. In the story Jem and
spider (the main characters) run away from the police and try not to get caught.

Main Characters
Jem: she is 15 years old who lives in London. When Jem looks in someone’s eyes, she can
see the date they will die.

Spider: He is also 15 years old. And he is Jem’s friend.

The plot:
The book is about Jem. Whenever she looks in someone’s eyes, she sees the date they will
die. Jem avoids making friends, she hates looking in people eyes and seeing their number.
But one day she meets Spider. At first, she tries to avoid him but then it gets really hard not to
talk to him, although she knows Spider is going to die in a few months.
On the 8th of December they decide to go to the London eye together. But there was
something weird at the London eye. When Jem looked in people’s eyes, she saw the same
number on everyone. Everyone was going to die that day. Jem started to Panic. And started
telling Spider that they have to leave. Spider started running away with Jem, not knowing
what was going on. After a few minutes the London eye explodes. The Police thinks they are
suspects and everyone start looking for them. That’s when Jem and Spider decide to run
away.

Narrative structure
 Point of View: The story is told in the first person, from the point of view of Jem.
 Time: the story starts in 2009 and it ends five years later.
 The story is written chronologically. With no flashbacks or flashforwards.
