Titrations
Titration Process:
Titrations allow you to determine the exact volume of an acid/alkali that is needed to
neutralise an alkali/acid.
To calculate the concentration of one of the solutions, a standard solution can be used.

Steps:
1. Using a glass pipette, measure out a set volume of the
solution you want to calculate the concentration of and
put it into a flask.
2. Add 2-3 drops of indicator (Phenolphthalein or Methyl
Orange). Any more than this may affect the concentration
of the solution.
3. Use a funnel to fill the burette with your standard
solution. Initially let the solution run through with the tap
open to remove any air bubbles before closing to allow to
fill.
4. Add the standard solution into the unknown solution and
record the volume added when the colour changes. This
will become your endpoint. By carrying out this rough
titration you can get an idea of the volume you will need to add
and so will get an idea of when to slow down.
5. Repeat the titration going quickly until you near the endpoint.
Then, add it drop by drop until the colour changes. Keep repeating
until you have 3 concordant results. Make sure to rinse the conical
flask with distilled water to remove any remaining neutralised
solution, and then rinse with the standard solution to prevent
dilution.
6. Calculate the mean titre (volume added).

Titration Calculations:
To work out the concentration of the solution, you will need the concentration equation :

Concentration = Moles / Volume
