Unit 1: Developing effective communication in health and social care

P4: Explain Strategies used in health and social care environments to
overcome some barriers to effective communication and interpersonal
interactions.

Staff Training

Staff training can be very beneficial to overcome certain barriers within communication. Staff
training to a health and social care professional about dealing with an aggressive. The staff
would be trained to calm aggressive people and restrain them from doing damage to
themselves or others around them.

An example of this would be within schools teachers and staff are trained to deal with
students who are acting aggressively. They are trained to try to diffuse the situation and take
the student away from other students and placed into a separate room to help them calm
down, if this is not possible they may have to physically restrain the pupil to prevent harm to
the student or others around them.

Another way staff training can be very useful in combating barriers within communication
would be that health care professionals are taught how to use specialist equipment safely for
both them and the patient.

An example of this would be within a school teachers may wear a specialist microphone that
would be paired with a hearing aid that a student will wear and the teacher's voice will be
amplified. Staff training is required to make sure the equipment is running smoothly.

Health and social care personnel only using jargon when appropriate is another way health
care professionals are trained to overcome barriers in communication. This is when staff
shorten words down and talk in specialised language but are trained when it is appropriate
and to whom it is appropriate too.

An example of this would be a doctor in a hospital may use jargon when treating a patient in
trauma and they would take with specialist language to their peers. However they would not
talk to a patient with jargon because they wouldn't fully understand what is going on.
