THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LOCUS OF CONTROL AND
UBUNTU AND WHETHER THESE NOTIONS RELATE TO LEARNING
STYLE.
INTRODUCTION
Since the mid twentieth century, the human populations’ need for and ease of
access of information grew at a rapid pace propelling us into what we call ‘The
Information Age’. Since information is so easily available, we remain learners
throughout our lives. However, it is certain that not very human learns or studies in
the same way. We all have different learning styles. This project is about locus of
control and Ubuntu and whether these notions relate to learning style. Locus of
control is understood in terms of internal and external locus of control. Internal locus
of control reflects the belief that events result from one’s own actions and behaviour,
whereas an external locus of control means that events are determined by others or
by circumstances or chance. (Tutorial letter 102/2022, HRPYC81, pg 20) Academic
institutions such as universities and schools place importance on independent
learning, which is self-centric rather than socio-centric, and which is related to
internal locus of control rather than external locus of control. (Tutorial letter
102/2022, HRPYC81, pg 20) This could mean that learners who are brought up in a
more socio-centric and external locus of control way of life find learning in the
information age difficult? This research will try to answer this question by looking at
the relationship between locus of control and Ubuntu and whether these notions
relate to learning style. The questions answered are as follows; (Tutorial letter

1. How does locus of control relate to Ubuntu?
2. Ubuntu as a social norm emphasises a socio-centric rather than self-centric
way of being. Could there be a positive relationship between external locus of
control and Ubuntu’s socio-centric outlook? And if this is the case, what are
the implications for learning style?
In South Africa, education is a huge problem as social and economic problems
plague the country. By completing this research, I aim to obtain information that will
