, QUESTION 1

From a constructivist perspective, it is important to create learning
environments and learning activities that enable learners’ construction of
knowledge rather than just absorb it. Write a 1000-word essay in which you
critically respond to this statement with a lens on the teaching of numbers,
patterns, and relationships in any grade in the Intermediate Phase. You should
include examples, either from your learning experience at school, general
reading, or observation as a learner to illustrate the points that you make.

Please use the rubric 1, provided at the end of this Tutorial Letter, to guide the
structuring of your essay. It is important that you use this rubric to do self-
evaluation before you submit to ensure that you have completed all the
required elements for the essay adequately.

Constructivism is an approach to learning that creates an environment where the
learners have the ability to establish and grow their own thoughts, conclusions and
observations through their own experiences by working together with their classroom
peers. Constructivism is placing emphasis on the learners’ capacity to represent their
own knowledge. This teaching allows individuals to engage themselves in active
experiences which guides them to discover where there are gaps in their
foundational knowledge, which their peers can be involved in guiding them and
creating a deeper understanding of knowledge and broadens it. (Keengwe,
Onchwari, & Agamba, 2013).

According to Akpan and Beard (2016), it is a way of justifying ideas and putting them
together to create new ideas by understanding new experiences from prior
knowledge so that new ideas are completely understood by the learners. According
to Keengwe, et al (2013) Constructivism is essential in a classroom because it allows
the learning to be more personal and involve the learners in shaping their own
learning. This means they will be able to problem solve, create their own curiosity,
and most importantly develop their own abstract, logical and critical thinking skills.
(Senri International School Foundation, 2008).
