Investigating Factors that Affect The Period of a Pendulum
Purpose: To investigate which of these factors (pendulum length, pendulum mass, or launch
angle) impact the period of a pendulum.
Apparatus and Materials:
- Pendulum and support system
- Photogate
Procedure:
Part 1: Investigating Launch Angle
1. Begin launching at a 30-degree angle
, 2. Record the period length
3. Launch from 5 degrees less
4. Repeat step 2
5. Continue until the minimum launch angle is reached (5 degrees)
Part 2: Investigating Mass of Pendulum
1. Set to the heaviest weight (35g)
2. Launch from 30 degrees
3. Record the period length
4. Lower weight by 3.5g (one washer)
5. Repeat step 2.
6. Continue until there is no more weight
Part 3: Investigating the Length of the Pendulum
1. Set longest length (85cm)
2. Launch from 30 degrees
3. Record the period length
4. Shorten the length by 5cm
5. Repeat step 2
6. Continue until the shortest length is reached
