Concepts and Advanced Practice Roles Foundational 2 Roles in Advanced Nursing Practice The nursing profession is multifaceted, many contributing factors encompass the nursing role. Nurses have the capability of working in a variety of settings from medical offices, urgent care centers, acute rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing centers, hospitals, etc. Many nurses graduate with an associate degree and or baccalaureate degree, they are comfortable within their role and setting. Some nurses choose to further their education by becoming an advance practice nurse. Advanced practice nurses work autonomously within their chosen specialty, working with patients across all spectrums of the healthcare continuum (DeNisco & Barker, 2015). Transitioning into the role of an advanced practice nurse can differ from person to person. Some nurses have a great support system, while others lack support where needed. In this paper, the roles of the advanced practice nurse will be discussed, along with their educational requirements and workplace environment. The transition into the role of the advanced practice nurse from a registered nurse will also be described, using the strategies for a successful transition. Four Roles of the Advanced Practice Nurse There are four roles that are incorporated within the advanced practice nurse title: certified nurse practitioner (CNP), clinical nurse specialists (CNS), certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA), and certified nurse-midwife (CNM). Each of these specialties have different roles and relationships with the patient. According to DeNisco and Barker (2015), the scope of practice for the advanced practice nurse may also vary from state to state. Certified nurse practitioner (CNP) originally began to due to a lack of access for medical personal in lower socioeconomic levels; especially the pediatric population (DeNisco & Barker, 2015).
