Introduction
In this assignment I’ll assess and justify recommendation on how Tesco may change and improve
their motivational techniques. Beside this I will suggest which motivation theorist has influenced my
decisions. Motivation plays a huge part at Tesco as the employees members are the most important
assets; therefore Tesco needs to make sure they are motivated to ensure that jobs are done
efficiently. Tesco tries to motivate employees in order to achieve a desired goal and directed
behaviours.

Dear Sir/Madam, I would like to share my suggestions on how my ideas could improve your
business.

One of the suggestions that I recommend that Tesco needs to develop is to offer employees more
training courses to grow their ability, skills and knowledge. This motivates employees since it allows
them to see how the Tesco is taking care of them and helping them to achieve the best. It also
means they have more responsibilities to take in consideration. The advantages of providing more
training courses are that it enables them to explore new ways of providing customer service. I also
believe that trained employees are more motivated because they have an increased level of how to
deal with customers, which helps them to participate to the entire reputation of Tesco. This is
beneficial to Tesco in a long term since they can provide better services to their customers,
therefore in increases customer loyalty.

My second suggestion is providing employees with discount at Tesco, employees for example can do
their grocery shopping at Tesco for a lower price. Giving discounts will get employees attention to
Tesco and helps the business. This is because giving discount to employees will help increase sales as
employees would want to buy their weekly shopping at Tesco for a good price. Another reason is
that it will increase reputation of Tesco. This is because if Tesco is giving discount to their employees,
it will help employees who is having financial problems from an insufficiency of income which is
meeting Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (physical). This will show that Tesco is trying to make an effort
to help employees in tough times. Also it will help Tesco meet the businesses goals and targets
because discounts can increase motivation levels of employees so therefore will increase Tesco’s
sales figures. Moreover, it will help build stronger relationships as Tesco is benefiting employees so
this means employees will be engaged in their work, happy, won’t complain, take advantage of the
discounts and will enjoy a treat at Tesco. On the other had there are problems and issues that may
rise when introducing employees discounts is that it may cut down profit margins. This means Tesco
is selling their products/service at a lower price than the normal price. Furthermore when Tesco is
giving discounts to employees, employees may ask Tesco to give discount all the time. If Tesco
refuses, then they might lose employees, employee’s loyalty will be no more and the motivation
levels of employees will start to drop.

My third suggestion is providing flexible working at Tesco, employees can perform well and have a
certain time to work such as 9am to 2pm so they have time to work according to their schedule and
have a good home life with their families. Flexible working has many advantages to Tesco. It can
attract employees with greater levels of skills which creates a diverse workforce so the cost of
recruiting employees will be less. In addition, flexible working can attract students as well because it
will allows them to work in the evenings, weekends and during holidays. This means Tesco can
manage the workforce effectively and more profitably. Some employees might prefer early or late
shift so there will be more job satisfaction as employees will have better self-esteem, confidence
