Introduction
In this assignment am going to first compare the use of motivational theories in Tesco.
Motivational theorist usefulness of the theories
1. Frederick Taylor’s theory- increasing This theory is useful as it allows Tesco to set their
sales targets. employees targets or goals. The reason why this is useful
is because it informs the employees of what is expected
of them so it can help Tesco to grow and succeed. This
means the managers and supervisors motivate staff so
they can increase sales, meet targets, be determined and
have a positive attitude when doing their jobs.
2. Frederick Taylor’s theory- getting This theory is useful as it allows employees who work
bonuses for the employee’s hard work hard achieve high sales and maximise profit gain bonuses
because performance. This means by increasing sales
targets, Tesco gets the best out of its employees. Plus
Tesco can have a recognition programme where Tesco
where the best of workers are known as ‘employee of the
month’ so they can be appreciated and get credit for the
hard work they have done for Tesco. This will give
motivation to all employees so they can have a chance to
become ‘employee of the month’.
3. Elton Mayo’s theory- getting one to one This theory is useful as it allow directors to get feedback
feedback from the manager about how well the employees are
doing at Tesco. This is the time where manager can have
talk individually to employees to discuss any issues or
problems they are having. One to one feedback helps to
develop as well as improve employee’s performance. It
helps to identify their strengths and weaknesses. An
example of this is useful is that an employee might have
an issue with poor communication skills. This means in
order for an employee to improve communication in
Tesco, they must listen carefully, observe body language
and removing physical barriers that can distract them
from communicating effectively such as phones,
machines etc. This will then improve time management
for the employees so they can manage their time
efficiently as well as help them to increase in productivity.
4. Elton Mayo’s- working in teams This theory is useful as it allows employees to work
together to get the jobs done quicker so Tesco can
achieve their aims and objectives as well as make Tesco
efficient overall. Working in teams is a benefit for Tesco
as it increases motivation this is because it helps build
strong work relationships and builds trust with each
other. It helps cooperate with each other using their
individual skills and shows respect for everybody’s effort
and hard work to make the Tesco successful. By working
as team, this creates better quality production as
