Introduction
In this assignment I will be explaining how an organisation obtains the cooperation their employee. I
will use Tesco as an example to cover the contracts of employment and employees involvement
techniques
Contract of employment
A contract of employment is a contract that is prepared for the employer and employee. In the
contract it explains what the employer expect from the employee. In this contract there are many
things the employee has to agree with and once the employee is accepted for the job then he/she
start working there also the contract of employment is not verbal element as it must be a written
statement. Having a contract of employment is needed in the workplace as it allow employee to
understand the terms and conditions that are provided by the employer before starting work. An
example of this is that Tesco provides different types of contacts to employees to fit their schedule
e.g. part time employees will get a part time contracts which will only states their 16 hours – 20
hours contracts and the amount of responsibilities they have. These contracts will also differ from
permanent contracts because they will be based more on the long run.
The benefits of a contact of employment
Allows the employees to know what the employer expected of them from the business and
performs their duties well
Allows businesses to get best out of employees
It gives more control of the way an employee works
It helps meet businesses standards
It protects confidential information of a business such as when an employee learns about
trade secrets
The written document can be used as evidence if necessary.
Tesco also offers other contract of employments such as full-time and part-time contracts, fixed-
term contracts however they do not offer zero hour contracts.
A contractual entitlement is outlined within the contract of employment so that an employer and
employee know what is expected of each one.
Employee and employer rights
Employers and employees have responsibilities to each other, this is the rights of which employers
and employees hold within the business which is legal requirements in a workplace. They should also
expect their rights to be upheld. These rights and responsibilities relate to areas such as Health and
Safety, the provision of Terms and Conditions of Employment, Equal Opportunities and the right to
be paid a Minimum Wage. Tesco for example have a human rights policy of ‘fair treatment and
honesty wherever regardless of where they work’. One example of these human rights is that all
employees are entitled to take a break after a certain amount of hours, an example of this is if an
employee works 4 hours they are entitles to 30 minutes of break. The human rights policy promotes
the breaks. This motivates employees to cooperate with the Tesco as it makes them feel that they
important to the Tesco and that they have rights.
