Computer Misuse Act
Computer Misuse Act is a law in the UK that legislates against certain activities when using
computers and laptops. This law is against activities such as hacking into other people's systems,
misusing software or helping someone gain access to protected files on another person’s
computer/laptop. It is split into 3 sections and makes illegal:
• Unauthorised access to computer material
• Unauthorised access to computer systems with intent to commit another offence
• Unauthorised modification of computer material
This act helps to protect New VIc student and staffs accounts. For example, pupils assignment’s on
the system will stay safe and secure because of this act.
Advantages and disadvantages
An advantage of computer misuses act is that it allows New Vic to make sure that their files that
contain information are kept secured and held safe. Plus if an unauthorized person gains access the
information they will have to face the consequences in other word this means that if New VIc get
hacked by a cleaver programmer and if that cleaver programmer gains information then they have
the right to report this and the person involved will be caught. Also the computer misuses act makes
sure that staff members or other students who have access of student’s information don’t misuse
student’s information. An example of this is at New Vic students must wear their lanyards, they are
not allowed to give it or allow other students use it because if there is a fire alarm and if you’re stuck
in the fire and another student uses your then they will think you’re the one who used it which put
you in danger so to avoid this from happening students must wear their own lanyards, if they don’t
then there are consequences.
A disadvantage of computer misuse act within New Vic is that it can cause New Vic to lose money
when it comes to lawsuits. An example of this is if a cleaver programme hack into another person
system and gains access to that persons information then they would have to take the person to
court. This will cause New Vic to lose money because it will mean that they’ll have to spend money
on lawyers which this might be seen as a disadvantage
The Freedom of Information Act
The Freedom of Information Act provides a person or organisations with the right to request
information held by a public authority such as hospitals, schools and others. This public authority
must tell the person requesting the information whether it holds the information, which it must
supply within 20 working days, in the requested format.
An example of this is New VIc. This is because New VIc has student’s information so if any individual
requests for information New VIc must give it. However New Vic cannot provide information about
students because as it may be used for the wrong reason. For example if a parent asks for a
individuals address and name New VIc cannot give it and the request for information from the
parent will be declined as the rules comes under the Data Protection Act.
