Week 1 -> CH2,3
Wetenschap
- Bewezen waarheden (levert feiten op)
- Toetsbaar
- Niet descriptief

Wetenschapsfilosofie
1) Ontologie

Waar komt afbakeningsprobleem vandaan?
- Wetenschappelijke revolutie + Verlichting
- Nieuw empirisme (Francis Bacon)
- Valkuilen van rationalisme
1) Idols of the tribe
bedriegen
2) Idols of the cave
- Intuïtieve biases (enorme liefde voor Griekse oudheid +
geloof Aristoteles bijvoorbeeld)
3) Idols of the market
4) Idols of the theatre
- Dogma’s en methoden van verouderden scholen
(Aristoteles)
- Bijdrage Bacon: nieuwe epistemologie: basis in observatie en inductie

,Characteristics Scientific Revolution
1) Commitment to observational method
2) Universal mechanics
3) Universal mathematics

- Bijv. dagelijkse realiteit, Berkely, Hume, positivisten
2) Coherentiecriterium (Descartes)
- Bijv. wetenschappelijke praktijk, beleidspraktijk, pragmatistische epistemologie
machtsbalans
- Bijv. empirisch relativisme, methodologisch anarchisme

Locke
- Primary qualities: even if there were no beings to perceive, the ‘snowball would still be round’
-> Corresponding qualities
- Secondary qualities: only exist when perceived (like colors, smells, sounds, textures)
- Tertiary qualities: powers objects have to change another object so that it causes different
sensations in us (sun has power to make wax white)

Berkeley
- Mind-dependent and mind-independent qualities raise serious problems: how can we be sure that
shapes are objectively there if all we have to go on are the experiences we have of them?
- Idealism: to be is to be perceived (esse est percipi): objects only have ideal, not real or material,
existence

Hume
- Perceptions
1) Impressions
- Immediate data of experience
2) Ideas
- Faint copies of impressions
- Copy principle: knowledge ultimately derives from impressions received trough the senses

, What Woodrow Wilson did to make ‘good government’ mean white government
- Wilson was the most prominent progenitor of discriminatory and discursive practices that allowed
him and other Wilsonians to claim simultaneously the mantles of progressive politics and white
supremacy
- Wilson (racism) vs Trotter (equality)
- Wilson always maintained that the goals of his administration were fairness and efficiency.
- Efficiëntie volgens Wilson is politiek idee

The Study of Administration (Wilson)
- The object of administrative study is to rescue executive methods from the confusion and costliness
of empirical experiment and set them upon foundations laid deep in stable principle.
- Administrative questions are not political questions
- Doel bestuurskunde:
1) Discover what government can properly and successfully do
2) How it can do these proper things with the utmost possible efficiency and least possible
costs
