Gestational Diabetes When a women discovers that she is pregnant, many thoughts of joy and anxiety comes to mind. One of the most common questions that can cause extreme anxiety is whether they will h ave a safe pregnancy. Many complications can occur with pregnancy. Some are inevitable. However, most are treatable and preventable. Gestational Diabetes falls into that category. During pregnancy, the maternal body can begin to produce too much sugar in the blood. When the mother’s pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to breakdown the sugar, gestational diabetes develops. This condition will last throughout the pregnancy, but can be managed carefully in order to maintain a healthy pregnancy. American Diabetes Association have set the gold standards for the diagnosing and treatment gestational diabetes including Oral Glucose Tolerance Test, glucose challenge test, and use of human insulin.
