, 1.0 Claim
Alloy metals are superior to elemental metals.
2.0 Rational & Background information
The claim was refined as “Alloy metals are superior to elemental metals”. Metals are
fundamental elements in our lives. Approximately three-quarters of all known
chemical elements discovered are known as metals. According to the royal society of
chemistry, there are 94 metals on the periodic table, and each can be classified
differently (Weinhandl, 2022) (“Types of Metal and Their Applications - Mead
Metals, Inc.”). There are several categories of metals, each with its unique
characteristics and properties. These substances are characterized by their high
electrical and thermal conductivity as well as their malleability, ductility, and high
reflectivity of light (Britannica, n.d.). (“Metal | Definition, Characteristics, Types, &
Facts | Britannica”) Elemental metals, also known as pure metals, are made up of a
single type of metal atom. They are typically found in the periodic table and have
specific physical and chemical properties, such as a high melting point, ductility,
and conductivity. Examples of elemental metals include copper, gold, silver, and
iron. On the other hand, there are alloys which are subgroups of metals. Alloys are
metallic substances composed of two or more elements (Tammann, n.d.). Iron and
its alloys account for about 90% of the world’s production of metals, mainly on
account of their excellent combination of strength, toughness, and ductility at
relatively low cost (Sundar, 2022).Because it’s very soft to pront rust and
2.1 Figure 1
Figure 1- Classification of metals (Rana, 2019) As demonstrated in figure 1
metals can be grouped according to their
elemental composition and structure.
There are 2 main groups of metals,
ferrous, and non-ferrous metals. The
difference between them is that ferrous
metals contain iron and non-ferrous
metals do not (Ferrous vs non-ferrous,
n.d.). Ferrous
irons are frequently used as they have
tensile and durability; however, they do
not corrode and rust more often than
non-ferrous materials (RMG, 2019). This
report will take a further look at low alloys which will be discussed further in the
report.

slow heating and cooling in relation to
carbon content (Iron-Carbon Phase
