Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)2023 updatedWhat is MRI and what is it used for? - correct answer MRI is a type of diagnostic imaging study that uses a magnetic field and pulses of non-ionizing radio wave energy to image various structures in the human body, along various planes. MRI is commonly used when more detailed soft tissue imaging is needed. What are the components of the equipment? - correct answer The external magnet: The external magnet produces the static magnetic field that magnetizes the target tissue. Gradient coils: The gradient coils create 3 gradient magnetic fields superimposed over the main magnetic field. The different gradient fields allow for imaging on the 3 different planes of the body, side to side, front to back, and head to toe. Radiofrequency equipment the computer: The radiofrequency energy generated by the transmitter serves to excite the hydrogen atoms within the body. How does the equipment work? - correct answer When the patient is placed in the MRI unit the hydrogen protons all line up to the magnetic polls of the static magnetic field of the MRI equipment. Now that the protons are lined up they need to get excited to produce the image. This is where the electromagnet comes in. When the electromagnet is pulsed the protons are temporarily disrupted to either 90 or 180 degrees from the static magnetic field. Then they are returned to lining up with the magnet. When the protons return they give off electromagnetic energy. The EM energy given off is then recorded by the MRI equipment. The difference in tissue densities is measured by how quickly the proton releases its EM energy. What are the limitations of MRI? - correct answer - Patient size - Non ferrous metals - Equipment needs to be super cooled - Long exam times What are the advantages of MRI? - correct answer - Non-ionizing radiation - Diagnostic quality image - 3D images What are the safety concerns associated with MRI? - correct answer - Internal metal devices - Loose metals - Poor kidney function - Allergic reactions
