NR 501Week 6 Discussion: Borrowed (non-nursing) Theories Applied to the Nursing Profession . While the focus of this course is nursing theory, frequently the use of non-nursing or borrowed theories occurs. Identify your future nursing practice area. Discuss how a specific non-nursing (borrowed) theory has been or could be applied by nurses (specific to practice focus) to effectively deal with an issue. Be sure to provide an example of how the non-nursing theory can be used to enhance the selected practice area. Remember to include scholarly reference(s) to support your information. Potential discussion topic focus areas: • Nurse educator practice issues: student retention, faculty preparation, critical thinking skills. • Nurse leaders or nurse managers - administrative issues: staffing, use of supplies, staff performance. • Family nurse practitioner - clinical practice issues: chronic illness, aging population, social determinants of health. • Healthcare policy practice issues - environmental health, healthy nurse initiative, childhood obesity. • Nursing informatics practice issues - ergonomics, project management, staff development Pasteur (Germ Theory) Louis Pastuer suggested the Germ Theory which stated that specific pathogens causes infections. This have paved the way in the different and a more targeted way of treating diseases rather than basing the interventions on traditions and without any objectivity (McEwen & Wills, 2017). Due to the determination of the causative agents of an infectious process treatment can be provided to cure infections based on their etiology whether it might be bacterial, viral, parasitic or fungal. Different classification of antibiotics has been invented throughout the years to be used as the management for infection, however, due to the current trends in use of said medications pathogenic resistance to these drugs have occurred. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) or multiple-drug resistance (MDR) has shown up to be one of the most important factors that determine the mortality and morbidity of a patient with serious infection. Carbapenem-resistant enterobacteraceae (CRE), MDR-Pseudimonas aeruginosa, MRSA are some of the most urgent and serious threat that the healthcare community is facing (De Waele et al., 2018). As a family nurse practitioner, the awareness of the risk factors for MDR helps in the prevention of this phenomenon. Included in these risk factors are mainly exposure to antibiotics, duration of hospital stay, use of invasive devices, immunosuppression and the community. As family nurse practitioners, we must realize the importance of our position in preventing MDR. Health teaching in the completion of the treatment of antibiotics is important in the prevention of MDR. Some patient once the symptoms have abated after taking their antibiotics stop taking the medication not knowing that this will cause resistance. We have to realize as well that sometimes, it is easier to take antibiotic medications when it has to be taken once a day instead of three times a day. Another way that as a nurse practitioner can help in the prevention of AMR is through the use of infection control. Knowing the causative agent and pathogen causing the disease will give the people around the patient such as the family members, nurses, doctors and other hospital staff the idea on how to protect themselves by implementing infection control protocol or isolation protocol. Transmission-based isolation precautions or patient isolation are infection control measures used in addition to standard precautions to prevent the spread of infectious agents (Schub & Karakashian, 2018). Thus, the Germ theory, even though it is not a nursing theory can provide different information that is vital in the performance and safety of nursing care provided to the patient and the nurses themselves.
