Week 8 Course Reflection and Future Application (Latest Update) Already Graded A+
Week 8 Course Reflection and Future Application Throughout the discussions occurring within NR 501, a common element has been application of theory. In this our last discussion regarding theory, it is time to focus on you and your capstone experience (yes, it is never too early consider this major project!). While it is too early to identify your project, let’s consider on your future practice area as this is the setting your project will occur in. Based upon your self-reflection and use of nursing theory within the discussions and assignments, select ONE nursing theory that you prefer and answer the following questions: 1. Why do you prefer the nursing theory you selected? 2. How can this theory be used in your current practice area (education, executive, advanced clinical practice, informatics, or healthcare policy)? 3. How can this theory be used in your future practice area (education, executive advanced clinical practice, informatics or healthcare policy)? Dr. Carol and Classmates When I first started this course, I was unaware of the importance of applying theory to practice or how theory supported the new body of evidence that promotes health promotion and prevention in the nursing profession. From the assignments, discussion boards, feedback and research done to complete papers, I have gained a greater understanding of the application of nursing theory on things such as nursing practice, research, education, and management. Nurses utilize theory to shape their practice and improve the quality of care provided to patients. In this class, we learned how to critique, evaluate, and apply various nursing theories and incorporate some of the theoretical foundations as a basis for our own nursing practice. We also spent a great deal of time analyzing different types of theories and concepts so that we may understand the difference between concepts, theories, mid-range theories, etc. We were given many articles to read and were required to submit feedback and discussion on the various articles under review. I feel that I have developed a thorough understanding of nursing theory and developed an appreciation for Nola Pender’s Health Promotion Model which I can use as the conceptual framework as I further my education. Health-promoting behaviors are active approaches to achieve optimal health, reduce the incidence of chronic disease and illness, and achieve better quality of life. Continual reflection can close the gap between theory and practice, improve quality of care and stimulate personal and professional development (Epstein & Hundert, 2002). I have learned how the application of theory can close the gaps in my daily nursing practice as a bedside nurse by serving as a guideline even as I progress to become a nurse working in the field of healthcare policy. The Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing Health Policy and Advocacy assert that a master’s prepared nurse has the skills and knowledge to promote health, influence the health delivery system, and promote social justice through advocacy and undertaking policy processes (American Association College of Nursing, 2011, p. 20). A nurse knowledgeable in this area can change healthcare policies to improve patient quality of care and facilitate access to resources, such as health promotion programs. To enhance the quality of healthcare delivery and promote positive healthcare outcomes, a master’s prepared nurse must understand the legal and political processes. A master’s prepared healthcare policy nurse can utilize in-depth research on Pender’s Health Promotion Model to influence and advocate for health promotion policies. Pender’s Health Promotion Model provides an applicable guide to maintaining a holistic approach of assessing, diagnosing and generating feedback from the patient so that interventions can be mutually agreed on to assist the patient maintain health, restore health or prevention of illness. This class has helped me develop as a nurse. Much of what was learned I will use to guide my daily nursing practice as I care for patients in the emergency department. I look forward to building upon this knowledge gained in this course as I pursue my master’s degree in healthcare policy and continue striving to make health promotion and prevention the center of each patient's care. Good luck everyone in your pursuit to further your education! It has been a pleasure to participate in our discussion boards over the last eight weeks.
