Task 1

P6 M3.

The context.
Prepare a written report on the business risks of insecure networks.
Give at least two examples of businesses that have suffered security breaches in the last
three years and what the consequences were for them (any court fines or business closures
in particular).
In your report explain how can these risk be minimised? Use the ISSA document you have
been given to guide you through your report.
your report must explain how to implement security in a network. Security is not just a
technological solution using firewalls but involves company policies and working practises
and procedures. When preparing your report you can say how SFX implements network and
information security amongst staff and students.
Written report on the business risks of insecure networks
Loss of service is when network services become inaccessible, there's variety of reasons why
this is possible; it may well be because of a IT issue, for instance a server undergoes a
forced shutdown or a physical connection is disrupted, those running the network may
choose to deliberately disallow users from accessing their network services. For example,
the PlayStation Network hack that made Sony shutdown their networks five years ago due
to a hack that leaked over 70 million personal user details. Despite what the reasons are,
loss of service is quite disastrous to owners of the network and their consumers/users. Once
a business’s network becomes inaccessible due to some network failures, the impact is
often something from a few of lost sales opportunities to the loss of the many customers to
a competitor, during the loss of service. Additionally, loss of service can cause in a loss of
client records; this may result in a loss of clients as they lose faith and become clients for
other businesses and organization that still have their networks fully functional, loss of
financial gain, and subsequently a loss of jobs to combat the increased fee of fixing/securing
their network and paying customers for their loss (I.e. their personal data).
Businesses with unsecured networks are at likely of having to pay addition costs, such as
network security, recoveries and compensation to the clients affected.
For instance, when information is missing, due to network failures, they (the owners of the
network) must once again do the work that is lost. This ultimately increases cost however
there is an additional issue that any new projects may be accomplished whereas the first
work is being re-created or fixed. Even if the information and data lost, is has been backed
up and can be restored, this can take a considerable time that can delay
other important tasks from happening which indirectly increase the cost-profit margin as
additional profit cannot be gained.
Loss of confidentiality happens if important data and information is accessed
by unauthorized persons, either through technology; information or data being sent from
one user to another or from client to server via unencrypted and unsafe methods,
