Unit 2: Practical scientific procedures and techniques
Learning aim D: Review personal development of scientific skills for laboratory work

I am a newly appointed technical assistant at a large chemical plant, Chemcalequip. In order to complete
my induction period and progress within the company I have to review and evaluate my performance of
the procedures and techniques that I have been involved in using so far (titration, colorimetry, calorimetry
and chromatography.) I need to identify the key practical and personal competencies I have shown whilst
developing and using these skills.

During my laboratory work in unit 2, I have taken part in:

Risk assessments:

- To identified all possible hazards in a lab.
- Level of risks for each hazard.
- Course of action to prevent hazard.
- What to do if hazards occur.

• Chromatography:

- To carry out the experiment correctly and safely.
- Worked with different stationary phases such as chlorophyll and 3 types of amino acids and
worked with new chemicals like ninhydrin and acetone.
- Obtained accurate results by calculating Rf value.
- Experienced different ways to carry out chromatography such as TLC chromatography and paper
chromatography.
• Titration:

- Learnt how to standardise solution of HCL & Na2CO3.
- Correct use of a pH meter and correctly calibrated it.
- Obtained accurate results.
- Correct use of a pipette filler.
- New skill: reading from the meniscus & calculating percentage error.

, • Calorimetry

- To obtain accurate results from gradient calculations.
- Calibration between two different thermometers (glass liquid and digital).

• Colorimetry

- To carry out a successful method to identify absorbance using The Beer-Lambert Law.
- Correctly calibrating colourimeter machine.
- To obtain accurate results using The Beer-Lambert Law.
- To find an unknown substance absorbance.

• Previous skills I had in lab work were:

- Calculation of Rf values.
- Identifying certain hazards, the level of risks and actions to prevent them.
- Calculating gradients and tangents from graphs.

• New skills I have learnt in the lab:

- Choosing correct methods to represent graphs such as, bar graphs, histograms, comparative and
composite graphs etc.
- Making different concentrations of solution.
- Learnt how to calibrate equipment e.g., calorimeter and colourimeter etc.
- Finding an unknown concentration.
- How to carry an investigation using hypothesis.
- Calculating the percentage error.
- I have improved my interpersonal skills by interacting with my new peers and forming a
relationship in the time we have had together.

· In learning aim A (Undertake titration and colorimetry to determine the concentration of solutions):
· I have developed skills & techniques such as:
