In this task I will be describing the main employability, personal and communication skills required
when applying for the Director of Operations.
Employability skills are skills that are necessary for getting and being successful in a job. These skills
allow employees to get along with their colleagues, develop respect, solve problems, communicate
well and make critical decisions.
The skill to work as a team is a key employability skill as it shows that you are able to cooperate with
other individuals within the same team. Having strong team work skills would enable you to work
within a team at BSkyB, allow you to help one another and learn from each other. A good team
player is one who listens, questions and participates; this means all individuals within the team are
putting their efforts into the work. As you will be working amongst a range of colleagues with
different backgrounds, it is best to ask questions when unsure of certain factors. This would allow
you to know more about the business and become more experienced in working with a team.
Professionally, if you are applying for jobs or looking for a promotion with your current employer,
you will almost certainly need to demonstrate good communication skills. For example, the ability
to: speak appropriately with a wide variety of people whilst maintaining good eye contact,
demonstrate a varied vocabulary and tailor your language to your audience, listen effectively,
present your ideas appropriately, write clearly and concisely and work well in a group all require
good communication skills. Many of these are essential skills that employers seek.
Being confident allows employers to have faith in you doing well; this will allow you to be more
successful. Having confidence would also allow you to stay positive and if you work for BSkyB it is
crucial to stay confident and positive as it would reflect onto the customers who would always have
a positive attitude. Confidence also reflects onto your work, if you were told to complete tasks you
have no experience in, you would be able to complete them through your confidence.
This is crucial to be employed; it shows employers that you can work to the best of your ability. It
also shows that no matter how difficult you find a task that you would still carry on trying because of
your determination and hard work. BSkyB would benefit from employees who are working hard
because it would allow the business to make more profit from staff putting all their energy into the
business.
Being able to solve conflicts shows that you are determined to make sure there are no difficult
situations being seen inside the business, customers may fear the business is not good enough.
Employees who have the courage to resolve problems are eager to work in a quiet environment, are
able to keep situations out of the business. Employees who resolve conflicts are beneficial for BskyB
as it wouldn’t lower the reputation of the business. This means that if the problem is resolved
quicker the business can run normally without any other problems.
