, 1 INTRODUCTION

The World Bank is known to be a reputable source of strategy and economic commentary
for countries around the world. In 2013, the World Bank advised that they would use two
goals in guiding its development around the world. The first goal and the one we will
discuss is to eradicate extreme poverty by bringing the percentage of the world's
population that makes less than $1,90 a day to less than 3% by 2030. According to World
Bank Group Report Correcting Course the current percentage is 10% down from 36% in
1990.However the pandemic has caused unprecedented reversals in poverty reduction
that are further impacted by rising inflation and the current war in Ukraine (World Bank,
2022). In order to achieve this in September 2015, the UN member nations agreed to set
of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) with the eradication of extreme poverty
everywhere at the forefront of these goals. Ending hunger, achieve food security and
improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture (SDG2) and to combat climate
change and its effects, immediate action must be taken (SDG13) forms a central part of
the Sustainability Development Goals. The SDG objectives show an acceptance that the
concept of poverty has several dimensions that can reflect multiple deprivations in various
aspects of well-being. As a result, the World Bank still plays a crucial role in the debate
process in combatting poverty through the indicators and data the Bank collates and
makes available to client countries and internationally. This report is compiled on the
request of the South African Government and seeks to examine the lessons that can be
learned from Bangladesh in eliminating extreme poverty using information and
communications technology (ICT) products, a nation that was once associated with
extreme poverty is now anticipated to rank as the 24th largest economy in the world by
2030.
