Welcome to Human Anatomy
Course Description
Biology 208: Human Anatomy provides an introduction to human anatomy, including
histology, through lectures, laboratories and practical work. In order to better understand the
anatomy, some very basic human physiology may be covered. It begins with the cell and its
components, some chemistry associated with life, then examines cell types, various tissues
including histology, organs, and the eleven organ systems and how they contribute to the
wellbeing of a human. When time permits, common diseases are briefly discussed. By
understanding structure (human anatomy), students will begin to understand function (cell
biology, homeostasis, and human physiology.) This is a non-GE course at CSULB.

Course Materials
REQUIRED:
• The McKinley package: Consists of the e-book text for McKinley along with a Connect access
code.
APR is in Connect.
• A Photographic Atlas of Human Anatomy & Physiology by Herbert and Heisler.
Note: You may choose another Atlas if you like. You must have at least one Atlas.

OPTIONAL:
• Atlas of Anatomy For Allied Health by Ward, 2nd edition
• A Visual Analogy Guide to Human Anatomy by Krieger

The required text is available online when you register for Connect on BeachBoard for a
very competitive price. You will find it under McGraw Connect in the course BeachBoard
site. Directions on how to purchase this are posted on BeachBoard by Dr. Gardner.

I suggest that you use the table of contents and index to find appropriate sections for your
needs for both lecture and laboratory. All students are required to buy a hard copy of one of
the Atlases and bring it to each lab session. The Atlas has labeled photographs of bones and
cadavers, which will prove invaluable. Past students really liked the Herbert and Heisler Atlas
but if you chose one other, that will be OK. But you must purchase at least one. Many prior
students say it greatly assists in learning in the laboratory.

Students MUST have online access to Anatomy and Physiology Revealed (APR) within
McGraw connect. Assignments and online quizzes will be done using this program, starting
with the first laboratory session.

A scantron 882 E is needed for each lecture exam. Please purchase these BEFORE the
morning of the exam. A total of four will be used in this course. You will also need to use a
pencil during exams. Do NOT use a pen on the scantron. It can’t be graded if a pen is used.
