Internships and Scholarships
Introduction:
The availability of internships and scholarships can greatly impact the educational and career
trajectories of college students. However, there is growing concern that biases may be present in the
selection process, leading to unequal opportunities for students based on factors such as race,
gender, socioeconomic status, and institutional affiliations. This research paper aims to investigate
the potential bias in the selection of college internships and scholarships and to identify potential
solutions to reduce such biases.
Literature Review:
Previous studies have shown that biases in the selection process of college internships and
scholarships can have significant consequences for students, particularly those from
underrepresented groups. For example, research has shown that women and minority
students are less likely to receive internship offers, and scholarship opportunities tend to be
concentrated among students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds. Additionally, there
are concerns about bias in the selection of students from certain institutions or majors.
Methodology:
This research will utilize a mixed-methods approach, including both quantitative and
qualitative data collection and analysis. The study will begin with a review of existing data on
the selection of internships and scholarships, including reports from organizations that offer
these opportunities. Additionally, the study will survey college students and recent graduates
to collect data on their experiences with the internship and scholarship selection process,
including perceptions of bias.
Results:
The results of this study will provide insight into the extent of bias in the selection of college
internships and scholarships and the factors that contribute to this bias. The study will also
identify potential solutions to reduce biases in the selection process and improve equity and
access to these opportunities for all students.
