Vraag: Hoe kwam er weer handel?
Rond het jaar 1000 stegen de opbrengsten van de landbouw op twee redenen:
1. Er werd meer grond beschikbaar gemaakt voor landbouw.
Bijvoorbeeld door bossen te kappen
2. Door uitvindingen op het land die het werk makkelijker maakten
Boeren hadden op deze manier spullen over en ruilden deze op de markt (= een
plek waar handelaren komen om producten de verkopen).
Markten ontstonden vaak op drukke plekken:
- Op een kruispunt van wegen;
- Op een kruispunt van rivieren;
- Bij kastelen;
- Bij kloosters
Ambachtslieden en handelaren gingen dicht bij deze markten wonen om hun
producten te kunnen verkopen. Dorpen groeiden uit tot steden.
