Unit 6 M1 Influences on learning

M1
Influences: On Learning
Aspirations and motivation:
During the start of the course I was undecided on whether I wanted to pursue mental health nursing
or adult nursing. As the course progressed and we began researching different occupations for
assignments I began to realise I enjoyed scenarios that involved adult nursing. During the beginning
of the course I found that I was very motivated regardless of the fact that I was also caring for my
father at home, however, as the course progressed the workload increased significantly and I found
that my motivation decreased.
Time:
During the beginning of the course I did have difficulty with time management as I was also caring
for my father at home, as the course progressed I also had my placement and it felt significantly
more unmanageable. Further on, my mother retired from full-time work and took my place of caring
for my father, which made the course much more manageable for me.
Priorities:
During the start of the course my priorities included; caring for my father, completing my workload
and finding a placement I would enjoy. Currently my priorities include; ensuring all my assignments
are submitted on time and completed to a high standard, attending open days in order to select a
university to attend the following year and increasing my attendance rates.
Learning environment:
During the beginning of the course I found that working in the LRC was very distracting and I
preferred working in classroom environments, however I have found that with the increasing work
load it is much more beneficial to be in the LRC with computers available to complete and submit
work.
Access to resources:
Access to resources in the LRC is of a high standard as books are always available either physically or
online, however I have found that the college network is often down which prevents me from being
able to access resources online.
Attitude and self-discipline:
During the beginning of the course my attitude was quite positive as it was a new chapter in my life.
I felt quite positive towards the course and felt I could achieve well. My discipline was quite good as I
have been involved with the army cadets’ force prior to beginning the course which provided me
with a good level of discipline and respect. During the middle of the course I felt my attitude
declined as the work load became much more challenging although I do believe my self-discipline
remained the same.
Health:
My health greatly affected my attitude and attendance on the course, there was a few instances
where I did take sick days which did affect my already low attendance (due to days I had off in order
to care for my father or accompany him to appointments).
Responsibilities:
During the beginning of the course my responsibilities included: caring for my father, attending
college, keeping work standards up, helping around the house and also feeding and walking the
family pets. Now my responsibilities are to attend college, complete assignments on time, feed and
walk the family pets, help around the house, tend to my father if my mother is busy, attend open
days, research universities and research accommodation for when I do attend university.
Relationships:
During the beginning of the course I kept to myself as I intended to focus completely on the course
and the work load, however, as the course has continued I have formed a friendship group and
taken the time to get to know my peers. I have also identified which tutors I can seek guidance from
for specific aspects of the course.
