Question 1
I have chosen the developmental context as I have a nephew who is autistic. When he was about 5
years old, my cousin noticed that he wouldn’t blend in with other kids. If other kids were around
him, he would just stare into space, he was moody, never really showed facial expressions and
tapped his finger most of the time, almost coming across as nervous or tensed, lacked interest in
many things and never made any eye contact. He underwent a lot of tests which included
psychological, physiological as well as occupational therapy. With appropriate intervention from
his parents, his school and medical professionals, my nephew grew into a superb young man, who is
now working as an intern at a highly reputable company.
Question 2
Once all the signs were gathered and a General Practitioner (GP) assessed my nephew, he was
referred to a developmental pediatrician and a child psychologist. His parents were also assessed
because they were told that autism is a genetic disorder. With both specialists, his treatment
entailed various tests such as cognition, psychological, language, general observation as well as the
interaction with the family. He had initial treatment and follow-ups once a week, thereafter, only
whenever deemed necessary. My nephew was moved to a school that specialised in autism. Here,
even though some kids want friends and others do not prefer, he seemed a little less tensed as he
was not seen by other children as the ‘odd’ one out. It also worked best for him as the teachers
were educated in autism and how to deal with the children on many levels, different cultures,
different genders, and even different ages.
Question 3
According to Foxcroft & Roodt (2018) early years are very critical in a child’s development. It is in
these early years, when growth and development happen, that have an impact in their later years.
Evaluation and assessment regarding a child’s development are important to help in identifying the
severity and nature of developmental delays like learning, cognition, language, and speech as well
as socialising. Intervention was most definitely required for my nephew, hence the choice to send
him to the school of autism which ensured that the children got special attention focusing on their
capabilities as well as what was on interest to them. Being at the school, the educational and child
psychologist was readily available for him. He felt at ease at this school, and it seemed like he
trusted more.
