Nestlé Shreddies
The promotional mix that is used by my chosen business; Nestle are advertising,
sales promotion, public relations and direct marketing; which all have many
advantages and disadvantages.

Advertising:
There are many methods of advertising that are used by Nestle to promote their
Shreddies cereal. All types of advertising have many advantages that benefit the
business; one such advantage of advertising via the television is that the
advertisement can be seen by a lot of people thus leading to a lot of people seeing
the Nestle advertisement and buying the Shreddies cereal. It also means that
Nestlé’s sales of the Shreddies cereal increase and they are able to get a higher
revenue which they can invest on other promotional methods to promote their
product. Another advantage of advertising via the television is that Nestlé are able to
reach their chosen target market much easily; their target is both children and
working people so for children they can show the advertisement for the Shreddies
cereal after or before cartoon shows and for adults the advertisement can be shown
during the day or late in the evening when they tend to be watching TV. Another
method of advertising that also has advantages and is used by Nestlé is billboards;
one such advantage of billboards is that a large audience are able to see them as
they are usually put up on busy main roads that are used by a lot of drivers. This
means that drivers that go past the advertisement are likely to see it thus Nestlé are
able to show their advertisement to a wider audience and their cereal is promoted
very effectively a billboards are very large with big and bold fonts that are eye
catching.

Alongside advantages, methods of advertising that are used by Nestle also have
disadvantages; one such disadvantage of advertising via the television is that the
advertisement can be very costly and expensive. Advertising via the television can
cost thousands of pounds for a few second slot; especially for when Nestle want to
have their advertisement up when their chosen target market is watching TV so for
children in the morning and afternoon and for adults in the evening. These slots are
very expensive unlike other slots in the early morning or late night which can be a
little cheaper however don’t benefit Nestle as their chosen target market are not able
to see the advertisement at that time. The use of such expensive methods also
means that a higher percent of Nestlé’s budget is used on TV advertising. Another
disadvantage of advertising via TV is that Nestlé are unable to change their
advertisement; if there was a special offer on their cereal they wanted to promote on
their TV advertisement they would have to make a completely new TV advertisement
to covey the special offer as the one already made cannot be changed. Advertising
via billboards also has disadvantages which include that messages highlighted on
billboards have to be brief. This in turn means that Nestle would have to come up
with short messages to promote their Shreddies cereal; they would also have to add
images more as drivers tend to focus on images more as it would be difficult for them
to read whilst they drive past. It also means that Nestle are not able to promote the
cereal properly with other information as it has to be kept short.

Another method of advertising that Nestle use is radio advertising. There are many
advantages of using this method; one such method is that the method is not as
expensive as advertising TV. This allows Nestlé to save money when advertising as
