Lecture preparation - Lecture 4
I want you to know about three major components of the cardiovascular system that are involved in
stress reactivity. We will revisit this topic in lecture 7, when we speak about mechanisms relating
personality to heart disease. To be able to understand this body of literature it is imminent that you
understand function and regulation.

Lecture specific learning goals:

 Students understand what blood pressure is, and are able to explain how blood pressure is
regulated.
 Students are able to derive what happens to blood pressure in response to stress and why, and
how blood pressure normalizes after the stressor has passed.
 Students understand how the autonomic nervous system regulates the blood supply system, as
well as the heart, and can derive how the heart responds to that regulation to adapt to stressful
circumstances.

4.1 Blood pressure
Please watch the knowledge clip on blood pressure and blood pressure regulation, and, read the book
chapter on blood pressure.

Self-study questi ons (you can write your answers in the box below):

What is blood pressure?
Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the vessel walls and is
generally measured in units of millimeters of mercury (mmHg).

Why is blood pressure expressed as two numbers?
Overall arterial pressure varies between the highest level of pressure seen at systole
(systolic blood pressure or SBP) and the lowest level seen in diastole (the diastolic blood
pressure or DBP).

What does diastolic pressure mean?
Laagst
mogelijke druk op de bloedvaten.

What does systolic pressure mean?

Gevolg is hypertensie.

120/80 is gezonde bloeddruk
140/90 = ongezonde bloeddruk

There are three higher-level self-study questi ons

(the box below the questions you can use for your answers)

When responding to stress, which pressure (SBP or DBP) is responding? Are they
responding in equal amounts? Or one more than the other? Why?

Describe the baroreceptor reflex. What happens when blood pressure increases?
omhoog => bloeddruk omhoog.

Hoge bloeddruk  PNS  verlaging hartslag dus bloeddruk omlaag.

Explain the relation between heart rate, cardiac output and blood pressure, and the role
of the baroreceptors.
hartminuutvolume = slagvolume × hartslag. Aantal liters bloed per minuut.
