Context
You are working to improve your finance skills and are currently on work
experience at an accountancy firm as a trainee accounts assistant.
, You have been given a case study with data on a manufacturing business
to work with.
Your task is to show your knowledge of manufacturing businesses by
preparing a report and a manufacturing account. These documents
should show your independent research and knowledge.
Prepare a report with the following headings:
Features and aims of manufacturing businesses
The first section must include:
Task 1
examples of manufacturing businesses
an explanation of the main features of a manufacturing business
reasons why most manufacturing businesses are limited companies,
e.g.
o size and scale
o high capital and/or sunk costs
o risk factors
o investment potential
o access to finance.
Manufacturing costs
The second section must start with manufacturing costs. You must include
a description of:
prime cost

direct costs including labour, materials and expenses
indirect costs (factory overheads) including labour, materials and
expenses

production cost.
Manufacturing profit
The third section of your report must describe what is meant by
manufacturing profit.
Complete your report with an evaluation and justification of the
Task 3 accounting treatment of manufacturing profit, considering why it is
important and giving reasons for incorporating this profit into the
manufacturing account.
Task 4 Finally, to support your report and show that you can apply the relevant
accounting concepts, use the data provided to accurately prepare a
manufacturing account. This must incorporate appropriate adjustments
and manufacturing profit.
