Teachers often asked why they must teach entrepreneurship to all learners if
South Africa does not need all learners to be an entrepreneur. Why do you
think is it important to teach entrepreneurship at school? Give five reasons for
your answer. (25)
- It is difficult to detect learners who are gifted at entrepreneurial skills,
entrepreneurial education should therefore, be stretched as
extensively as possible across the educational curriculum. According to
Campbell (2020), entrepreneurship is a creative process which revives
innovation. He also believes that the growth of the economy is directly
influenced by an innovative environment and as understanding of the
relationship is vital to understanding how society operates and its future
success (Lumadi, MW,2021:200).
- Entrepreneurship education is useful to learners as the skill and qualities
it entails can be used later in life. It gives learners a broad
understanding of the world and the ability to add to it in a
knowledgeable manner. Most importantly is the ability to re-establish
creativity in interpretation and thought and encourage learners that
failure is the first step to success (Lumadi, MW, 2021:201).
- Educating learners about entrepreneurship is advantageous as it
develops learners for the workplace. Although it is not of significance
for the youth to succeed in work endeavours at a youthful age, it is
considered an incentive. It is more important that learners are provided
with the experience that employment for oneself is a recognized
alternative, which they can either turn back to later or make use of the
skills acquired in a different workplace (Lumadi, MW, 2021: 201).
- Educated entrepreneurs may not necessarily be stronger
entrepreneurs, however, they will be better skilled to know when, where
and how to start prospective business operations in the future. Likewise,
they will be better equipped to make the most of their skills for both the
community and themselves. It further allows learners to alter the
perspective they have of themselves by providing them with the
necessary economic tools, such as economic jargon, business plan
and their own income, therefore creating in them a change which
results in empowerment (Lumadi, MW, 2021: 201).
- Entrepreneurship results in new experiences which can be shred with
others such as peers and family, regarding positive results with certain
businesses. Therefore, it provides learners with views on how to thrive in
the mainstream economy, thereby creating further options to street
crime and drug abuse (Lumadi, MW, 2021: 201).
