Unit 2 P5 M3 D2 National Initiatives and Anti-discriminatory Practice

P5
Actively promoting anti-discriminatory practice
 Ethical principles:
Justice: Individuals are to be treated fairly regardless of their background.
Autonomy: An individual’s choices must be respected.
Beneficence: The professional should conduct themselves in a manner that benefits the
individual.
Non-maleficence: The benefits of a treatment should not be outweighed by harm caused by
treatment or intervention.
 Promoting individuals’ rights, choices and wellbeing:
Individual rights are important to the individual as it can show that they are respected an valued,
simply helping someone who has difficulty with communication by organising the correct
services will help the professional show the individual that they are respected and valued. For

If any form of discrimination is identified, it should be immediately challenged. A few examples
of how this could be achieved are as follows:
 The implementation of guidelines and government policies at local level by managers
and employees
 Awareness training events in a continuous professional development
 Challenging colleagues demonstrating any form of discriminatory behaviour
 Challenging inappropriate behaviours
 Reporting to a higher authority when aware rules have been broken

Putting the patient/service user at the heart of service provision

When an individual requires the care of a professional, they may feel vulnerable. They can

that the individual is in control of the service. This also empowers the individual as they are in
control of their own choices, and choices are not being made for them, which would make the
