P1- Explain the concepts of equality, diversity, and rights in relation to health and social
care
Social, cultural and economic diversity
The economic benefits of diversity can be seen in society for example trade is allowed between
countries due to being diverse as people from different countries and backgrounds are employed
allowing communication between people of different languages that lets exportation and trading to
happen overseas. But within health care, the benefits of economic diversity could be having new
scanning equipment that and treatment methods. a lot of the NHS’s scanners are made and created
by people from different countries. Without economic diversity, these trades would not be able to
happen. Also without having a diverse society health care professional from different backgrounds
will not be able to share their knowledge of treatments. And without this our care might not be as
effective as care provided by other countries.
Language
The current English language is formed from a mix of different languages from groups of people
ranging from French, German and more. Other languages bring additional benefits. For example,
having an opportunity to communicate with people from different countries will not only learn to
speak new languages but also share what they have learned with other people which will eliminate
language barriers in communication. But in relation to health and social care with new languages, it
is possible to use a translator when communication. Providing a service-to-service users from
different countries.
Social cohesion
A cohesive community allows relationships between people from different countries. With
individuals from different countries all in one community, they will feel that they belong and should
value and respect everyone else from different backgrounds. In health and social care individuals
working in multicultural care teams, each individual will create a sense of belonging for each
professional as they are working together to perform their job to the best of their ability. Without
social cohesion in a community or in a hospital, they will not work effectively together.
Food
Because our communities are a mixture of people from different backgrounds, we are multicultural
in the foods we eat. With people from different counties, religions, and traditions, many different
types of foods are available. Health care professionals when creating meal plans and feeding
residents with a diverse society food that different residents eat are now available due to a diverse
society. With foods from around the world coming into the country will provide service users with
their traditional meals that they enjoy.
, The arts
Equality in the arts has given people of genders a fair opportunity when performing. Equality and
diversity has allowed more females to perform in the arts. Giving them the opportunity to act in
men’s roles. Also, services like art galleries have art from around the world that show the beliefs of
different societies. This allows members of the public to gain an understanding out what life is like
for different people.
Concepts of Equality
Equality means ensuring that everyone in the same setting as you are all have the same equal
opportunity. Moreover, they can have the same opportunity regardless of their abilities to complete
a task, their background or lifestyle. To ensure equality in everyday life acts like the Equality Act
2010 have been administrated to allow fair and equal rights for everyone. An example of promoting
equality could be one child with a learning disability and another child without learning disability
both apply for the same school. The teachers assess that there are no support aids to support the
child with a learning disability. They then proceed to get a support teacher to allow the student to
get equal opportunity as everyone else and except both students into the school. If in this scenario,
the teachers would reject the child with learning disabilities this would be discrimination. In
addition, discriminating should not be accepted in any situation. By the student being discriminated
against could make them feel isolated and left out not being accepted because of their differences.
In addition, to ensure equality many things in some societies have been done. Like equal pay for
both genders and not employing someone because they are different. With these in place, all
making up the Equality Act 2010 equality is maintained in modern society eliminating or showing
less discrimination.
Equality Act of 2010
The Equality Act 2010 was put into place on October the 1st and includes 116 separate pieces of
legislation. The act is a legal document that has been followed by every business and association in
the country to protect the rights of individuals from unfair treatment. Under the equality act, there
are 9 main pieces of legislation that I will mention later that make up a big part of the act. The
equality act is based on these main factors Age, Race, Gender, Disability, Religion or belief, sexual
orientation, marriage or civil partnership and pregnancy and maternity. I will now mention the 7
pieces of legislation that support this act below.
The Equal Pay Act of 1970
The Equal Pay Act 1970 is an act that has been put in place to prevent discrimination between
employment and pay with men and women. This act was put into place after years of protests of
men receiving more pay than women for doing the same job and the same hours. This was then
assessed within the workplace and the Equal Pay Act was put into place. Now in the present women
and men are all paid equally to one and another depending on the job role. For example, a male
nutritionist and a female nutritionist will each be paid with the exact same wage to maintain this
action.
