National initiatives can be seen as a campaign that are implemented nationally to make
individuals aware of a certain issue. National initiatives are put in place by the government
and other organizations to support individuals to make a change. An example of a national
initiative put in place by the government could be. A gay pride day was put in place to share
respect and diversity for individuals who are gay. By the government doing these gay
individuals do not feel like an outcast and feel proud to be gay. Another example of a
campaign put in place to support football players was. Show Racism the red card this
national initiative was to tackle racism with football players. Advertising and education were
given out to the public to stop racism in football. This was effective as it caused a decrease
in racism in football with promoting anti-discriminatory practice.

The three main types of national initiatives

Convection- A convection is an agreement covering a particular matter. For example an
agreement between to change a law.

Legislation- A legislation is a law that has been thought of and created that applies to
everyone. For example, The Equality Act 2010 is a piece of legislation.

Regulation- A regulation is a rule that has been made an must be maintained by an
authority such as the NHS. For example, employers must pay male and females equally this
is a regulation that must be maintained.

Anti-discriminatory practice

Anti-discriminatory practice is something that someone is able to do to prevent someone
from being discriminated against. In order to prevent discrimination from happening people
have found the causes of discrimination and then providing laws to prevent the causes of
discrimination. Laws like The Equality Act 2010 and The Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
Discrimination in health and social can include discriminating against someone’s disability,
their age, their weight, their religion or their race. When anti-discriminatory practice is
promoted it allows people to feel better about themselves because it is now illegal for them
to be discriminated against. Anti-discriminatory practice can be promoted by
understanding, involving, information, asking and priority ensuring everyone gets the same
care.

Without anti-discriminatory practice, individuals would be discriminated against and certain
types of people would be treated worse than others because of their differences. I will now
talk about pieces of conventions, legislations, and regulations that have been put in place to
prevent discrimination and promote anti-discriminatory practice.

The European convention on human rights is a national initiative. This is an agreement
across Europe which is put in place to protect human rights and freedom. Any individual
that feels they have their rights violated can go court about the violation giving people a
voice because of this act being put in place. This act mainly covers education, human
dignity, religion and liberty and security for European individuals. A strength of this national
initiative being put in place has given every individual in Europe an opinion and allowed
them to understand their rights. An example of how effective this law is could be. A man
called John has been living with terminal cancer. Unfortunately, John is provided in a car
accident and broke his neck. When John woke up he realized in his notes he had a DNR had
been put in place without his consent. The hospital is breaching John’s human rights
because he never discussed having a DNR. The hospital violated the right to private life
causing major consequences to them that could be a fine or prison sentence. This national
intuitive promotes anti-discriminatory practice because it gives people rights allowing them
to have a voice to complain.

Examples of how this act can be used to promote anti-discriminatory practice

1. Standing up for people regardless of who they are

2. Raising awareness to people who might know their human rights

3. Providing a human rights information sheet to give to service users so they know their
rights

Human Rights Act 1998

The Human Rights Act 1998 is an act where you are able to defend your own rights. This
protects everyone no matter if they are poor or rich or young or old. I think the human
rights act is effective because it allows everyone no matter their circumstances to be
protected giving them a voice to speak out. The advantages of the human rights act could be
it helps raise awareness to everyone about basic human rights, it gives people more rights
and also protects them no matter what the situation is. It also gives more opportunities to
people who don’t usually get them like disabled and foreign individuals. However, the
disadvantages to the human rights act could be this legislation alone does not reduce
discrimination also this act gives the judges too much power. Alternatively, I think the
human rights act is effective because it gives people the rights they deserve. I also think it’s
good because it helps people in the UK whether they are a British citizen or not. Overall I
think this act has been useful and effective because if someone is being discriminated
against and they do not think it is right the human rights act would be able to help them.
This act promotes anti-discriminatory practice by providing individuals rights no matter their
differences by not discriminating against the protected characteristics.
