PHI 103 PHI103: Informal Logic
The three most important attributes I believe that a person must have is humility, listening, and open-mindedness. Humility involves knowing your limits, and having appreciation for the intentions, strengths and perspectives of others. It is also important because it avoids the arrogance that people sometimes have about a certain topic or subject. I like it because in essence takes away the idea of having any superior knowledge even when you think you may be an expert on something humility helps you achieve a more open mind when there is more wisdom and insight for one to learn. The task of listening is more than the ability to absorb information, it’s more of a process for me and I feel it is very important in fostering good self-esteem, improving relationships, and can even improve speaking. Good listening requires receiving, understanding, remembering, evaluating, and responding. Open mindedness I feel is most important of my 3 attributes although they all tie in with each other. It means being critically receptive to alternative possibilities, being willing to think again despite having formed an opinion, and sincerely trying to avoid those conditions and offset those factors which constrain and distort our reflections. Though it can be tough to do sometimes, I've always found that when I open my mind, I've learned a great deal. There is much to be gained from opening the door to your mind and letting new ideas and beliefs come in. In my experience, for some people being open minded is easy. It comes as effortlessly as breathing. For others, having an open mind can be more of a challenge, something that they have to work on and make an effort to obtain.
