, EXISTENTIAL THERAPY
It is possible to define existential therapy as an approach that completely focuses on
the human condition (Corey, 2017). The therapy adopts a constructive strategy that
highlights people's abilities and goals while also recognizing their shortcomings.
According to existential therapy, people have intra-cognitive conflicts as a result of
their interactions with certain life circumstances (Corey, 2017).
The key ideas of the existential approach are: (a) self-awareness; (b) freedom &
responsibility; (c) longing for identity & relationships with others; (d) the quest for
meaning; (e) anxiety as a condition of existence; & (f) awareness of death &
nonbeing (Corey, 2017).

THE THEORY OF TWO PROPOSITIONS
THE CAPACITY FOR SELF-AWARENESS:
The three elements of freedom, responsibility, and choice form the basis of
self-awareness. Our chances of liberation increase with our level of awareness. The
central tenet of existential philosophy, according to Schneider (2008), is the notion
that we are free (willing, artistic, and expressive) yet restricted (by environmental and
social constraints). We strengthen our capability to live completely when we
strengthen our awareness in the following:
• Due to our short lifespans, we are unable to pursue all of our life goals.
• We have the choice to act or not to act; choosing not to act is a choice.
• Since we have the ability to choose our behaviours, we have some control over our
future.
• Finding our place in the world and committing to living creatively are the steps that
lead to finding purpose.
• As we become more conscious of the options at our disposal, our sense of
accountability for the results of those decisions also grows.
• We are vulnerable to feelings of isolation, loneliness, futility, and nothingness.
• Despite the fact that we are essentially alone, we can interact with other life forms.

Either expanding or contracting our consciousness is a choice we have. The choice
to increase self-awareness is essential to human development since it lies at the
core of most other human abilities. In the course of counselling, people may become
more aware of the following areas:
