Marks and Spencer
Marks and Spencer PLC - (also
known as M&S) is a major British
multinational r etailer headquartered in
the City of Westminster, London. It
specialises in the selling of clothing,
home products and luxury food
products. M&S was founded in 1884
by Michael Marks and Thomas
Spencer in Leeds.

In 1998, the company became the
first British retailer to make a pre-tax
profit of over £1 billion, although
subsequently it went into a sudden
slump, which took the company, its shareholders, who included hundreds of thousands of small
investors, and nearly all retail analysts and business journalists, by surprise.

Marks and Spencer’s business

M&S over the past 130 years has grown from a single market stall to an international, multi-channel
retailer. They sell stylish, high quality, great value clothing and home products, as well as
outstanding quality food, responsibly sourced from around 3,000 suppliers globally.

M&S ownership

Marks and Spencer is a (PLC) Public Limited Company, this means it offers its shares to the general
public, often through the Stock Exchange. The share prices of these types of companies are always
monitored and can be seen in daily business newspapers accounting websites and at M&S financial
reports.

The first owner of Marks and Spencer was Michael Marks; he started the company as a sole trader
until 1894. In 1894 Michael formed a partnership with Tom Spencer, a former wholesale company IJ
Dewhirst, since than the company started to expand. Tom Spencer died on 25 July 1905 and after 2
years Michael Marks died on 31 December 1907. Then it has become a time for advancing the
success of the two founders: in 1926, Marks and Spencer became a public company and 2 years later
the St Michael Trade Mark was
registered. Throughout the years Marks
and Spencer has been expanding and does
not stop its expansion even nowadays.

Current performance

Marks and Spencer’s have not had the
best previous years. Previously their share
prices were down, they were losing sales
and inevitably digging themselves into a
hole. Although they have not fully

recovered since 2012 downfall in sales and share prices, they are currently improving. If we look
back in December of 2012, M&S at that time used to be: 307.00, but in September 2013 it went up to
511.50, which is a clear evidence that M&S has improved in effectiveness of business operations and
taken some measures to take the company out of recession.

Since October 2014 Marks and Spencer’s
shares have risen by more than 8 percent and
the company have begun growing profit
margins by 1.5%. Although this is good
indicator of financial performance, the sales
such as clothing sales have decreased by
2.9% which the company needs to address
immediately. Marks and Spencer’s are slowly
and gradually improving and if they continue
in future years they may be able to fully
recover from their downfall. Marks and
Spencer’s are on the right page and are
constantly bringing out new products and
expanding into new areas. The article in the
link below analyses how the company are making progress but still have a long way to go.

Has it turned around in fortune?

Marks and Spencer’s was hit hard by the recession. Their sales were down, their shares prices were
decreasing and many shareholders wanted to be out of the company. Marks and Spencer’s also had a
closure of 27 stores resulting in a loss of 1,230 jobs. This helps to shows what a difficult position
they were in in the years 2008-2012. Marks and Spencer’s has defiantly turned itself around. The
company has had a massive boost in online sales, food sales have greatly increased and large
amounts of money has been spent improving their clothing range to improve sales which assists the
company to turn itself in fortune.
