Creatine Kinase

Document preview thumbnail
Preview 2 out of 6 pages

Creatine kinase is also called creatine phosphokinase. It is an enzyme that helps control the binding of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in a cell. This is caused by creatine kinase, which causes the movement of the phosphate group from ATP to form phosphocreatine. This cell keeps the phosphate group stable and acts as a storehouse of energy in the cells. Thus, cells with high ATP requirements have higher levels of creatine kinase. Creatine kinase is found in the following human organs: skeletal muscles, cerebral cortex, heart muscle, smooth muscles, thyroid glands, kidneys, and liver.
