normal behaviour ends and abnormal behaviour begins.” Discuss two or
more definitions of abnormality (8 marks)
One definition that can be used to define abnormality is a deviation from social
norms. It primarily refers to behaviour different from those stated by social norms
and is hence, classified as abnormal. Social norms are standards of socially
acceptable conduct or unwritten rules set by a social group, that are adhered to
by those socialised into the group.
Another definition is ‘Failure to function adequately’. This definition considers the
individual perspective and says abnormality can be judged in terms of one’s
ability to cope with everyday living. Rosenham and Seligman (1989) proposed
signs of failure to cope and they are as follows:- 1. They no longer conform to
interpersonal rules like maintaining personal space, 2. They experience personal
distress and 3. They behave in a way that is irrational or dangerous.
However, despite the fact that there are multiple definitions of abnormality, it is
hard to decide where normal behaviour ends, and abnormal behaviour begins.
For example, social norms are susceptible to change over time and so, what is
considered ‘abnormal’ or a mental disorder now, may not be considered so in the
future (these norms are subjective to change)
Another example is that not all individuals with mental disorders are unable to
adequately function in society. The signs of dysfunction are also subjective -
levels of distress are up to the interpretation of the psychologist and therefore,
we can conclude that abnormality is very difficult to define.
