HIS 100 Module Five Activity Historical Interpretations Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of your current event. • Exploring my research question allowed me to travel back in time by reading the first -
hand accounts of many activists who dedicated years of their lives to advocating for LGBTQIA rights. This is important to grasp because lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender , queer, questioning, intersex, and allies have experienced decades of violence and neglect. It is well known that within communities that are neglected, targeted, and treated with violence, crime rises. • Although we have seen advances, there continues to be an overrepresentation of LGBTQIA individuals in the criminal justice system of the U.S. Exploring my research question has helped with highlighting the root causes of this event. Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your histori cal and current events. • Biased perspectives will always exist when it comes to historical and current events. Specifically, if we use the stories that appear in the media out lets. There is censorship everywhere, and I am sure that this limits the content that can be published, making it obvious that those who decide what is presented or made accessible to the public may be chosen based on personal interest thus, being guided by their bias. • This also applies to the many articles that I read for this topic specifically, from anti -gay articles that continue to shame them for who they are, to articles that try to influence their readers regarding the type of parenting a same sex couple gives, in comparison to straight couples. Words that continue to damage the perception of these individuals and paint them as inadequate to participate in dictated social norms. Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it we re told from a missing perspective. • A narrative or perspective missing about my historical event would include the experiences of Latin e/Hispanic and African America n individuals. If I had a better understanding of the way they experienced the fight for their rights as part of the LGBTQIA community my narrative would change completely, the research itself would be more accurate and complete.
