TOWARDS AN UNDERSTANDING
• Profiling is not a common activity in forensic psychology -> Belgium
• Forensic psychology ≠ forensic science or law enforcement (no blood spatter analysts)
• (Forensic) psychologist studies human behavior
o Causes, consequences, motives (why does someone behave in a certain way?)
• Tries to apply psychological principles to assist legal system
• “Forensic”
→ latin: “Forensis”
→ means: Of the forum (marketplace in Rome: public court)
• Latterly means: “Related to the law”
• Interception between: law and psychology
HISTORY
• Middle Ages and earlier: good and wrong related to religion, demons, witches, sinners …
o When you did something wrong your were possessed through a demon
o However: individual liability (= your responsible for your deeds)
• End of Middle Ages: first use of ‘insanity’ (= person might not be in fully control of his deeds)
• 19th century: Lombroso: criminal atavism (theory)
o You can recognize criminal’s trough physical anomalies (strange/expressive faces)
o People can build on this knowledge even though it’s a strange theory
o Psychopaths can give you a strange feeling (by talking, in their look)
→ Maybe Lombroso saw that to
